Torcello Wine Glass, Set of 4
Named for the small island near Venice, the Torcello glass is hand-blown with a twist, literally. Each one is worked while the glass is still soft, so the ribbing spirals rather than runs straight, like a tide rolling in. A knopped stem, thick in the middle like a small captured bubble, holds up a slightly bell-shaped bowl, giving it an old-world silhouette close to something you'd find at a Venetian trattoria.

About the Maker
This piece comes from a Belgian design house with roots in the tabletop trade going back to the 1980s, known for pairing serious craft with a slightly irreverent eye. Rather than working from a single house style, they bring in outside designers and chefs to shape each collection, which is why no two lines quite look alike, some sculptural, some playful, some almost architectural. What ties it all together is a refusal to take tableware too seriously while still making it very, very well.
