Harlequin Matchbox

Regular Price$120

In 19th-century London, children staged whole productions on paper theatres small enough to hold in two hands. This PORTA x Pangea matchbox is one of those tiny stages grown suddenly enormous, and its star performer has already taken his bow. A harlequin in a diamond-patched suit and tall black boots lies stretched across a striped crimson stage, drum on his chest and sticks in hand, as if he’s paused mid-parade for a nap. A scalloped red border frames him like a proscenium arch. Inside, a stack of extra-long, red-tipped matches stands ready to light the footlights, or at least the candles on the dinner table.

Dimensions: 11¼ x 7½ x 2¼ in
Material: Printed cardboard matchbox with wooden matches

About the Maker

Part Fellini fairground, part Cocteau dream, part Commedia dell’Arte, with a little Bauhaus choreography keeping time. For the 2026 holiday season, PORTA x Pangea pitches a striped tent in the snow. Pangea is painter and ceramicist Laëtitia Rouget and creative director Colombine Jubert, two friends who build whole worlds out of color, cloth, and gesture between Lisbon and Paris. Each piece in their Winter Carnival began as a spell rather than an object, then slipped into disguise: a matchbox, a notecard, a paper crown, a stocking, a flag, an advent calendar. Harlequins leap, acrobats hold their pose, and stars trail along a wandering ribbon, all of it made to come out of storage every December for years to come.
