Ottoline Serving Bowl

Regular Price$168

A wide, open serving bowl, deep enough to hold a dressed salad for six without it ending up on the tablecloth and wide enough that a serving spoon can move through it with gumption. The painterly border runs in two bands: an outer ring of teal scrolls, each one a loose spiral dotted at the centre, and an inner wreath of small paired leaf sprigs in teal and pale blue-grey — the two together giving the rim a density that rewards the lingering eye.

Tess Newall developed the motifs in this collection from English garden fireplaces and country houses, the Bloomsbury Group's painted interiors among them, alongside the Italian majolica and French faience collected by artists of that era on their travels.

Hand-painted in Portugal. No two bowls are identical.

About the Maker

Art should enrich the routines of everyday life. That was the conviction of the Bloomsbury Group — and it is the starting point for the Ottoline Collection, designed in collaboration with Tess Newall. Developed between East Sussex and New York, the collection draws from the creative world of the Bloomsbury Group . Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant allowed painting to escape the frame entirely: spilling across walls, wardrobes, fireplaces, and ceramics. Tess Newall's studio sits a stone's throw from Charleston. Over nearly a decade she has painted murals inside some of Britain's most extraordinary buildings — an 18th-century orangery in Gloucestershire, a turreted room in the Old War Office overlooking Whitehall — learning how colour shapes atmosphere and how a room becomes a world. Her work is rooted in research: in the vernacular of folk painting, faience, and the decorated domestic object, in the idea that the visible hand of the maker brings joy in both creation and use. She doesn't believe in saving things for best.
