Kitchen Timer
Michael Graves designed this in 1992, the same year he was turning out the pepper mills and the Whistling Bird kettle that still sit in half the design-conscious kitchens in America, and the family resemblance shows: a conical body, a mirror finish, a set of colored fins that could belong to a toy rocket or a piece of Bauhaus-era jewelry. Graves borrowed as much from Art Deco skyscrapers and pre-Columbian pottery as he did from anything strictly kitchen-related, and the timer still carries that mixed ancestry. No batteries, no screen. Twist it once, and it counts down the old way, with a bell.
