Le Typographe

Le Typographe takes its name from a small bark beetle that carves winding, labyrinthine paths beneath the bark of spruce trees, which is a fitting namesake for a studio devoted to making marks on paper. Founded in Brussels by French designer Cédric Chauvelot, a graduate of the city’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts, it began as a workshop-boutique with a single press. Today it fills a narrow townhouse in Ixelles with cases of lead and wood type and a row of vintage Heidelberg presses, turning out notebooks, cards, calendars, and desk goods with a crisp, Japanese-inspired precision. Its stationery now travels to shops around the world, but the studio keeps its own rhythms: at lunchtime, the presses stop and the team sits down together to a meal cooked by the founder.
