From Alice, on Motherhood

To be a mother is to be changed completely, and then asked to carry on as though nothing has happened. You move through the world looking much the same, and yet your own heart begins walking around outside your body.

To be a mother is to discover that opposites can live side by side. Joy and worry. Tenderness and fury. Wonder and exhaustion. Pride and fear. The deepest gratitude at being together, and the inevitable longing to be alone.

To be a mother is to live in a state of constant adjustment — when to hold close, when to step back, when to comfort, when to let them struggle, when to protect, when to trust, when to say no, when to say yes. Tiny decisions, made daily, that shape another life.

To be a mother is to learn that capacity is not fixed. You think there is only so much patience, so much energy, so much love to give. Then you stretch. You soften. You become resourceful in ways you never needed to before.

To be a mother is to live in amazement. At their separate selves. At how early character arrives. At the child who is stubborn as stone, the child who feels everything, the child who watches quietly and knows more than they say. At night, when the day loosens its grip, they tell you the truth. What mattered. What hurt. What they noticed. What they fear. A small hand reaching for yours in the dark.

To be a mother is to understand that everything precious is temporary. The hand in yours. The weight on your hip. The mispronounced words. The request to be carried. The unquestioned belief that you can fix all things. You are happy in the moment and grieving it at the same time.

To be a mother is to accept the strangest assignment of all: to love someone completely, while preparing them to leave you. To raise them toward independence. To teach them to think for themselves. To be proud when they disagree with you. To stand back as they become separate. It may be the only relationship whose success looks, in part, like distance.

To be a mother is to be taken for granted, then suddenly understood years later. To be a mother is to give without always being seen. To steady what others stand upon. To keep loving through every version of them.

To be a mother is life’s greatest gift and one of its hardest challenges. To be remade, again and again, by love.
