Get On With It

Winter, in the most British sense, is reliably damp and comically inconvenient.

Stained rings of tea become a kind of domestic armour; fringes are permanently windswept, and pints are pulled far before five. The weather rarely improves, so one must adapt. Borrowing from that impressively stubborn temperament — the instinct to crack on — our nearly spring winter edit shares a vision of insatiable Londoners who will stop at nothing to carry on.

A person in plaid pants eats a meal with a fork and knife at a table covered with the Cruz Tablecloth; a slice of bread and a glass of water are nearby.

March, after all, is meant to be spring. The calendar insists on it. In practice it behaves much like February, only with the occasional daffodil making a brave but premature appearance. The British have long understood that this time is less a season than a rumour — one that arrives eventually, after a fair bit more rain.

And so the season is lived indoors, or just at the threshold of it. A fire peppers its amber warmth through the pub room while coats hang over chair backs, dripping at a rate worthy of the forecast. Long lunches melt into early dinners, coffee cups tapped with spoons between stories. Dice scatter across red felt. By the door, umbrellas crowd together like wet walking sticks.

On the menu are salty sweet sausage rolls, pies, and very old Bourbon. In the tub, there are bubbles. In the kitchen, the kettle is always on.

Outside, the weather behaves exactly as one expects it to: pavements slick with rain and lingering patches of snow. Like us, the birds are eager and confused about how many layers to wear to walk the dog. This is the season of turning up anyway — mud on your boots, hair slightly ruined, but in good time for a pint.

Go on, get on with it:
