This work is composed of a multitude of textiles that the artist sourced and brought together from different moments in time and place. United within a new composition that juxtaposes size and opacity, the work becomes an ever changing apparition of light and form that never reveals itself in the same way to the viewer twice. Utilizing natural botanical dyes, Motnyk has imbued the work with an overarching tonal direction that gives the textiles new life and context.

Piece is available for pick up/ shipping week of June 10th. 

Material: Mixed linen, cotton and silk with naturally dyed fabrics; antique embroidered silk from China; antique printed fabric from Japan and antique brocade from France; hanging beam: cherry wood with hand-waxed finish

About the Maker

Kiva Motnyk’s work in textiles reinterprets historical and cultural traditions of making through modernist abstraction and a uniquely attuned sensibility of color The non-pictorial objects resemble paintings or stained glass, evoking spiritual experience of natural landscape. The works are imbued with deep origin stories of the textile’s materiality and personal narrative; each element of the composition speaking to the detailed process by which it was made.
