Frances Palmer | Wood fired bud vase with fluting, ash porcelain stoneware

$2,000

This vase has been created by Palmer in a special early spring wood firing. A true work of alchemy, Palmer uses clay bodies designed for wood firing, working with glazes that play well with the ash and flame. It takes roughly ten to twelve hours for the kiln to reach the internal temperature of 2350 degrees, requiring Palmer to load wood every three to five minutes during this time.

As the wood burns, the ash flies up over the pots and at the high temperature, melts on top of the glazes to create an additional, unpredictable glaze.

Unless otherwise arranged, this piece is available for pick up/ shipping week of June 10th.

About the Maker

Frances Palmer has been making ceramics since 1987. While she was trained as an art historian, she has always made work with her hands, first as a printmaker, and now as a potter and gardener. Working out of lovingly restored colonial revival barn in Connecticut that has been converted into her studio, Palmer’s artistic approach expands beyond her ceramics, as in rather the cultivation of a complete and intentional way of living which encompasses a deep love of and attention to gardening, beekeeping, cooking and entertaining, and photography of her ceramic works and floral arrangements. As a maker, she rejoices in sending her work out into the world for others to enjoy - believing firmly that her ceramics are functional pieces of art to be used on a daily basis. Each piece that she makes, no matter how large or small, is considered an individual.
